VISUALIZING SHAPE INTO FORM
An Afternoon Workshop with Maura Holden & Laurence Caruana
This brief five-hour workshop rolls a variety of different Visionary techniques into one package. First, we will each create our own unique geometric "armature", or structuring pattern, applied in black ink on a hard painting panel. Second, we will paint in fast-drying water-based color(s): expressive, random forms or atmospheres that lie semi-transparently on top of the black ink "armatures". The final stage of our project will be the application of overpainting white. We will gaze into the armatures we've created, and the random wild forms and atmospheres whirling or flowing around them, and we will begin to see things in the paint and ink... vague forms or perhaps visions... With the aid of visualization exercises, as needed, we will pick out a more and more distinct image in the established forms, until we have each created our own spontaneous Visionary composition. Time permitting, these paintings may be glazed with a fast-drying transparent film of paint, called a "unifying glaze".
Students should bring:
- Drawing materials
- Drafting materials (compass, ruler etc...)
- Favorite acrylics and paint brushes
We will supply gesso Boards, paper, mediums etc.
Following the workshop, there will be artist slideshow presentations by Laurence & Maura.
Laurence Caruana is an artist and writer whose work integrates the myths and symbols of different wisdom traditions. Classically rendered in the Mischtechnik, his art abounds with fantastic, dream-like and visionary imagery. Widely known for his Manifesto of Visionary Art, he has authored several books on sacred art, dreams and the Gnostic world view. As a teacher, he has led Mischtechnik workshops on both sides of the Atlantic and often lectures on Visionary painting. In 2012 he became the Director of The Vienna Academy of Visionary Art. www.lcaruana.com
Maura Holden was born in 1967 in Philadelphia PA. She spent most of her childhood absorbed in a multi-dimensional daydream, drawing and painting her inner visions. As a young adult she discovered the work of Ernst Fuchs and the Viennese Fantastic Realists, and thus found her tribe in the pages of books... The work of Ernst Fuchs in particular transformed her inwardly, in a profound emotional way... The technical virtuosity of his work raised her standard of rendering, and started her studying the materials and techniques of Medieval and Renaissance Art, but beyond this the spiritual authenticity of his vision opened her perceptions to new potentials of healing and spiritual connectedness... A growing sense of community with other artists of the imagination eventually led Maura to exhibit at American Visionary Art Museum ("High on Life" 2002 - 2003), which underscored her Art Brut and spiritually-driven-self-taught sensibilities.... This in turn led to a cover article in Raw Vision magazine (Fall 2006) In the following years, Maura worked with Jon Beinart, Daniel Mirante and Laurence Caruana, among others, building towards the vision of an international Imaginative Art community, with high artistic standards of craftsmanship. In 2011 Maura Joined Laurence Caruana, Amanda Sage and Andrew Gonzales in teaching the "Visions in the Mischtechnik" painting seminar in Torri Superiore, Italy, now her permanent summer post. In 2014, she will begin teaching at the Vienna Academy of Visionary Art, leading courses during the Winter Trimester in monochrome underpainting and "Modelage", the art of making miniature sculptures for use as painting references.
